Stepping away from anger provoking circumstances will eliminate inappropriate behavior. Using the above driving situation as an example, instead of trying to catch up to the individual who cut you off, pull over and rethink the outcome before resuming your traveling. Pulling over will allow you to relax and continue with a positive reaction.

Using a breathing technique will help relax you if you are in a situation and unable to leave. Learning to relax is a main factor in avoiding a negative reaction to anger. An excellent breathing technique to relax yourself is to inhale deeply through your nose, count to five and deeply exhale out of your mouth. Continue until you feel yourself starting to relax before going back into the situation.

Everybody gets angry, but not everyone reacts with a harmful outcome. If you find yourself continuously feeling angry or you have a lot of anger that has built up, try to express it through a journal. Many times we can get more accomplished when it is visible. Each night write your entire days activities in a journal. Remember to read what you have written, compare it to previous days and see if there are any similarities to your behavior.

Hitting a wall or worse, someone else is a sign the anger is completely out of control. If you are angry everyday for no apparent reason, you will need guidance on how to control the anger. Trapped In A Stereotype (Escaping The Scapegoat)

Stereotypes are some of the most harmful and degrading categories that people could ever become a part of and these categories can create situations or unfair reasons for (undercover) discrimination. They even cause negative reactions from the people who become a part of the stereotype. I believe that the best way to describe a stereotype is to call it a very big assumption.

Entire groups of people can be effected by the stereotypes of people that share things such as race, gender, and economic status; but it is not fair to generalize a person for any of these things or treat them as a whole when they are an individual that might not be anything like anyone that makes up the whole  that they are labeled as.

Just because I am a Black Man does not mean that I do not work, that I sell drugs, that I do not take care of my children, that I wear my pants down to my knees, that I hang on corners, that I drink 40 oz’s, that I smoke marijuana, that I disrespect women, that I am hostile, that I am uneducated or many of the other stereotypes that Black Men fall under. All of those things are negative stereotypes that Black Men sometimes fall are labeled as. Just because I am a Black Man means that I am a man that happens to be black from the level of melanin in my skin. This does not mean that you have to use profanity when you speak to me, offer me a blunt, assume that I am materialistic, or deny me anything because some Black Men have traits that would make them the wrong type of person that
you are looking for. If you want to do any of these things, do them because you have witnessed me do any or all of these things, because I might react in a way that is not anything close to the way that you believe that I will react. Maybe I MIGHT fall into one, some or all of the categories, but it would not be fair for anyone to assume that I do or to treat me like I do.

People who know me as an individual know me well enough to know the type of person that I really am, do not have to assume anything at all and they treat me like the person that I truly am. I do not know everyone in the entire world and there are some people that I will not ever meet, but the person that I present myself as is the person that I really am even though I sometimes have had biased opinions made about me (some good – some bad) just because of the way that I look or sometimes act. The reason that I am saying that assumptions should not be made is because the reaction that I have to an assumption is created by the assumption itself and the reaction might not be a good way to judge me since I was guided to a situation by someone who does not know me.

Scapegoats are ways to blame someone else for mistakes that are much bigger than they are capable of making or that they have nothing to do with at all. There are some scapegoats that I could not ever avoid, but I can fight being used as a scapegoat by not showing people that I am a part of the stereotypes that I mentioned above. It is much easier for me to defend myself from the facts when I do not place myself into situations or broad categories that are much more harmful than beneficial. Some things will come back to haunt people for as long as they live, but some things in the past can become a permanent part of the past when the present is consistently presented. In other words, the only way to change the way people look at things from the past is to change what people see today and show actions that are the opposite of stereotypes (when possible) to avoid becoming a part of a stereotype.

Tips for Great Looking Medium or Long Hair

How Not to Lose Your Keys!

Soooooooo, how many of you out there have lost your keys at one time or another?

I am betting that roughly all of you have.

It’s OK because I thought I would make a quick post on how I have eliminated that problem once and for all.

Now pay attention to this because it is REALLY simple.

Step #1 Get a Hook or Nail

-What you want to do here is get a simple hook you can find at a hardware store or pretty much any store. If you cant find a small hook then get a nail. Yes, you heard that right, a nail. Now take your hook or nail and put it somewhere that is close to the door that you leave/enter in. That’s it for step one. Easy huh?

Step #2 Put Your Keys On This Hook/Nail EVERY Day!

-This is by far the hardest part of never forgetting your keys. The hard part is not putting your keys on the hook, it’s remembering to put them there. Now, this is going to take somewhere along the lines of 20 days for you to develop the habit of putting your keys on a hook, but it is well worth it.

I know this is sooooo stupid and silly but it works. I know where my keys are ALL THE TIME.

When I leave I grab them from the hook and when I get home I put them back.

I am never wasting time looking for my keys.

And speaking of time, the average person spends close to 20 minutes looking for their keys.

If you lose your keys twice a month at an average of 20 minutes per time, you are wasting 480 minutes a year or 8 hours. That is a whole work day that you could have spent making money instead of looking for keys. I’m just sayin…

Practically everything we do in life involves some form of communication, so it’s important to improve those skills as it can have a very positive impact on your day to day life.  Having confidence in verbal communication is particularly important.  People make judgements about each other based not only on how we behave but also on what we say.  The words we use and how we say them are a vital part of communication skills.  If you feel that your vocabulary is lacking, there is no better way to improve that than reading good quality books and publications. Not only will it expand your vocabulary but it will also assist you in expressing ideas and opinions, all of which will increase your verbal confidence.

Confidence in verbal communication involves expressing your thoughts and opinions and knowing you have the right to do so.  Again, the needs of others are considered.  In this context, assertive communication does not mean using bullying or obnoxious language to insult or belittle other people in order to get them to do what you want.  It is only people without any true personal confidence or personal power who use language in this way.  Truly confident people use language effectively but with an awareness of how their words can impact on others.  Verbal confidence means expressing your needs, feelings and wishes in a non-judgemental and non-threatening way and it also means not de-valuing your words by linking them with hesitancy or contradiction or uncertainty.  Confident people always express themselves clearly which is extremely beneficial to others as they give clear and concise information about their needs and wishes.  It is often when people are confused or have misunderstood something during a discussion or conversation that frustration and anger comes to the fore.  With clear communication, conflicts rarely occur.

So how do you develop confidence in verbal communication?  Well, assertive communication often involves the use of the word “I” and is followed by your opinion, thought or feeling.  It shows also that you are taking responsibility for those thoughts and feelings, rather than implying someone else is behind them.  It can be hard for a person lacking confidence to assert themselves in this way and to make requests, especially if they feel that they do not deserve to have their needs met.  This is very common in many people and hinders them in asking for help.  Another difficult situation is if you are required to confront someone about something.  Confrontation is all too often a daunting prospect as most people assume it always involves arguments and unpleasantness.  Yet in confident communication, this doesn’t have to be the case.  By using confident and assertive language, you can calmly state your case, taking responsibility for your opinions and thoughts and then allow the other person the chance to do the same.  This is the most effective way to deal with disagreements and disputes.  Confident communicators are always aware that everyone involved must have a chance to speak.

Along with voicing opinions and requesting, confidence in verbal communication also requires being able to say “no”.  Refusals are often seen as negative, yet they are essential.  A confident person will not overburden themselves by accepting a project or extra workload they know they will struggle to accomplish.  Women especially find it difficult to say no, feeling that they should be eternally helpful and caring.  Yet, the confident communicator will know that it is far better to be honest and refuse someone’s request than initially accept only to fail later on to complete the task and therefore disappoint and frustrate others.  When refusing a request, it is best to keep your answer simple and give a quick explanation.  Your honesty will be appreciated and respected.  Do not feel you have to apologise for refusing a request or disagreeing with someone.  Remember that verbal confidence requires respect – not only for other people but also respect for yourself.

Shining the light on energy saving light bulbs – the top 10 questions

Following on from Energy Saving Week, which took place from 19 – 25 October, we thought that it was about time someone tackled those myths about lighting – so here are our top 10 questions about energy saving light bulbs and those dirty incandescent ones.

1. Aren’t energy saving bulbs much dimmer than traditional ones?
Whilst Energy Saving light bulbs once had a reputation for being dim this is now outdated. Most modern varieties – produced by household brands – are just as bright as traditional bulbs and give an equally ‘warm’ light.

2. Aren’t energy saving light bulbs full of mercury and other toxins?
A standard energy saving light bulb contains 3 to 4 milligrams of mercury- whilst a standard thermometer contains at least 100 times more mercury! Indeed, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs states that the amount of mercury in lamps is less than the mercury that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere by coal-fire power generation to produce the energy used by an incandescent lamp.

3. Why has my local supermarket stopped selling traditional light bulbs?
From 1st September 2009, retailers in the UK were no longer allowed to buy traditional 100MW tungsten bulbs from their suppliers- they can however, still sell them until their supplies run out. Other wattage of bulbs will be phased out in a similar manner by 2012. Whilst many retailers chose to stockpile their traditional light bulbs, it is possible that some of the smaller retailers near you will run out of stocks quicker as they’ll have more limited storage in their shop.

4. How much would I save by using energy saving light bulbs? Aren’t they more expensive to begin with?
Again, they used to be, but nowadays you’ll find them competitively priced with the traditional bulbs. In fact, the Energy Saving Trust estimates that not only will they last longer, but you save around £2.50 a year per bulb in energy bills – so you’ll save around a total of £65 in energy and replacement costs over the lifetime of each bulb.

5. Is this banning the sale of traditional bulbs (yet another) thing that the EU is forcing on us?
Whilst there is an EU-wide directive covering the sale of traditional bulbs, the UK also has its own voluntary agreement with major retailers which actually goes further – stopping the sale of traditional bulbs a year earlier than the rest of the EU. The UK has also, uniquely in Europe, committed itself to cuts in carbon emissions outside any international treaty. Restricting the sales of traditional bulbs is regarded as being the “low hanging fruit” of the fight against climate change as it’s an easy, cost-positive way of cutting carbon quickly.

6. Don’t energy saving light bulbs need time to warm up?
