Before You Reject Your New Technology . .

I’ll admit I’m just as guilty on this topic as most people – every time Microsoft launches a new version of Office my first reaction is to reject it. If you just spent the last two years getting comfortable with Microsoft Word and recently switched over to Office 2007, you know what I’m talking about – new menus, new look and feel, different shortcuts, etc. Why couldn’t they just leave well enough alone? Before you reject your new technology, let me offer a software designer’s perspective.

Software is designed to achieve two goals at the same time: deliver features that customers want while minimizing the requirements to provide end-user support, primarily through intelligent design. It’s not always easy achieving both of these goals at the same time and software often ends up going to market with less-than-perfect features. There are even times when software upgrades make it harder to perform certain tasks within the software. Although the new features may appear to you that they were designed to frustrate you there is almost always a good reason for the new design.

Take, for example, the new menu structure of Office 2007. I don’t like it. But is that because it’s less useful, less robust and less intelligent than the last menu? Of course not, the new menus are much better. I don’t like them because they’re different and I don’t want to spend my time learning new ways of doing tasks I already know how to do.

Since I began using personal computers in 1985 I have seen a lot of changes, and have been initially frustrated with many of them. But over a few months of adjusting I have always come to prefer the new version. Although I could write a book debating why users should spend time ‘adjusting’ to new software, the point is that new software is usually better if you see it as an opportunity to improve the way you do business instead of a hindrance.

If technology is an integral part of a process then new technology must be viewed in terms of the process where you use it. If your only use for Microsoft Word is to write an occasional letter or memo, then you probably don’t care that the menus changed because you hardly use them. But if you use Word to create proposals, track changes on documents, perform mail merges, even automate tasks, then you should be very interested in knowing how the new version can make your life better.

Looking back on my own history of initially rejecting new software, I have learned that what I initially hate, I end up loving and not knowing how I lived without. I have also learned that I wasted more time resenting the software than the time it would have taken me to learn the new features. I now set aside half an hour or more to look over new versions and explore features, especially the ones I use most, and end up liking the new version much sooner. Ultimately new software can be the difference in whether your company evolves or stagnates.

Life can be pretty tough, in fact let’s be honest, life can be a bitch! Period! Not everyone that you associate with cares or understands what you are going through. In fact many times love ones don’t understand or are just too busy with their own lives to give yours much consideration.

So whats the answer? Actually it’s pretty simple. First who knows and understands you better than anyone else? That’s right, YOU!

So if that is true why not have a conversation with yourself at least twice a day and discuss exactly what is or is not going well in your life.

Frustrations can be huge in one’s life and if not properly dealt with they can fester and depress you more and more each day! Don’t let that happen.

Ask yourself why do I feel that way and how can I make it better? Remember if you are waiting for some else in your life to make it better, it’s going to be a LONG time before you feel any satisfaction.

Who really cares about you more than you? If you think your life is in bad shape. I will tell you that 98% of everyone you know is at least at your level of frustration or higher.

Consider this. When things are at their most difficult point and you believe there is absolutely NO place to go or anyone to turn to, turn to you, yourself and together you will survive and flourish, because YOU took charge of the situation and waited for no one.

What’s that shoe manufacture say? “Just do it!” Really talk to yourself, discuss what it is that is or is NOT going on in your life and together “FIX IT!” Yes I said “Fix It!” Together!

That would be you and yourself!

Crazy? No! Now people who just talk to themselves may just be mentally challenged. But in this case you are having a conversation with you about what matters most in YOUR life. Sounds pretty normal to me.

“What I’m saying is you’re not in any danger by right-clicking!”

This is no secret: I DESPISE the mouse. It’s not because they’re difficult to use or don’t follow directions. I don’t like the mouse because it is SLOW! Compared to hitting two keys on your keyboard, the mouse takes forever to drag across the screen, place on top of a button, click, move to the next button and click. Sheesh. If you just hit the Enter key, Spacebar, Tab or ESC key, you can get the desired results in a fraction of the time. Don’t you ever get tired of dragging your mouse around?

Well, I promise not to rant any more about the mouse because in reality, I can’t live without one. The mouse is a very powerful tool that, when used effectively, can greatly speed up the work you do. My preference is a touch pad mouse just below my keyboard or the ‘eraser’ pointer mouse integrated into a keyboard. These devices keep my hands on the keyboard so I can focus on typing. An external mouse means I have to move my hand away from the keyboard, which slows me down.

Are you using the full features of your mouse? Most mouse devices for PCs have a left button and a right button. The left button is the action button, allowing you to do things with a single click (like clicking the OK button in a dialog window). Generally people use the left-click the most, but I use the right mouse button most of the time.

The right button on your mouse typically enacts a menu or optional features of the item you are clicking on. It is the right-click menus that really open up the potential of using a mouse. Right-clicking on an object reveals all sorts of quick ways to do things like:

- Properties: display the properties of a file, shortcut, program, etc.
– Actions: copy, paste, delete, format, close, minimize, etc.
– Information: get tool tips, help, descriptions of what you’re clicking on

The best part about right-clicking is that you’re not actually performing an action until you LEFT-click on the item in the menu that you just displayed. What I’m saying is you’re not in any danger by right-clicking! You can explore all sorts of features and capabilities of your computer without the risk of doing something you can’t undo.

So give your mouse the right finger and click away. This is one of the best ways to learn how to use your computer more effectively. Find out what new menus, features and abilities are at your fingertips and you’ll start to see your computer in a whole new light.

These are 11 golden rules that I try to live by:

Live within your means – In order to be truly independent, it’s imperative to live within your means. Your freedom is limited by owing money to anyone, whether it’s a credit card company or a family member, so set yourself up for an unrestricted life by saving for the things you want and spending with a plan.

Work hard – Your job and the salary you command are your biggest assets in building wealth. Do your best at work and take the steps to make yourself indispensable to set yourself up for the highest level of success.

Research before you act – Whether you’re comparing travel package and a la carte prices for a vacation or looking up a company to see if it’s legitimate, research is almost always worth your time.

Avoid buyer’s remorse – Feeling guilty just doesn’t sit well. Avoid buyer’s remorse by asking yourself these questions before making a purchase: Do I love it? How often would I wear or use it? Can I afford it? Could I find it cheaper somewhere else?

Avoid saver’s remorse – There is such a thing as being too thrifty for your own good. What’s the point of squirreling away so much cash if you can’t splurge occasionally on yourself and others? Include an amount of discretionary money into your budget to spend on things that you might not desperately need, but would make you smile.

Strive for happiness – Finding a job that makes you happy most of the time is possible, and it’s worth taking risks to discover what fulfills you. If for one reason or another you’re stuck in a position that isn’t ideal, at least strive to end your day with something that does make you happy.

Go for quality, not quantity – Stuffing your closet with items that will fall apart in three months is a silly way to spend your hard earned cash. Buy a smaller quantity of things that are made to last, and you’ll be the owner of higher quality items that look and feel like they’re worth your money.

Face your weaknesses head-on – We’re not perfect, but admitting that you have weaknesses and doing your best to improve will allow you to continue growing. Invest time in yourself to be the most well-rounded person you can be.

Save for the predictable and the unexpected – We’re all going to face retirement someday, and the best time to save for it is now. The golden years are inevitable. On the other hand, we also need to be prepared for the unexpected, like job loss or a medical emergency, so that we can remain in control of our finances even when other things aren’t going our way.

Negotiate – Doors aren’t closed until you hear the word no. Negotiating things like salary and benefits can get you ahead of the game, and all you need is the confidence to ask.

Set goals on top of goals – Cap the feeling that you’re going through the motions by revising your goals when you’ve accomplished your old ones. Whether it’s saving for a vacation to a place you’ve always wanted to visit or considering the next step in your career, there’s always something to keep you moving and motivated.

If a 20-minute nap, a cup of joe, and more shuteye at night were in a cage match, who would win for reducing that classic afternoon “dip”? The answer is: (in order of effectiveness)
1.    Nap
2.    Caffeine
3.    The more nighttime sleep
A new study just released proves the power of a nap over a jolt of caffeine and even more sleep at night. It’s actually the first such study to look at all three methods for combating the afternoon lull that’s commonly experienced-and which is a very normal physiological response to the body cycling through its natural rhythms during the day.
Just because you feel sleepy at some point in the afternoon doesn’t actually mean you’re sleep deprived. About eight hours after you wake up, the body’s temperature dips a little, triggering that oh-so-annoying drowsiness after lunch and smack dab in the middle of your attempts to focus and get more done in the late afternoon.
Why am I not surprised the nap wins out? For many reasons:
Naps refresh you at a cellular level that-sorry, Soda-caffeine just can’t do.
It’s easier to over-sleep than you think. Biologically, the body doesn’t necessarily need that extra sleep if you force yourself to sleep more at night. (And getting sufficient sleep doesn’t mean your body won’t go through the dip regardless; it’s a natural, physiological phenomenon tied more to your circadian rhythm than to your previous night’s sleep and potential sleep debt.)
I’ve long been an advocate for napping. Which is the best kind? A 20-minute snooze within a 30 minute time period (10 extra minutes to get comfortable and into sleep mode). Or try the Nap-a-latteTM, which is the dynamic duo.
But here’s a big caveat: most people would probably choose caffeine over a nap, and ditch the nap entirely. Downing caffeine can be easier, quicker, and socially more acceptable in many ways. Finding a place to nap in the middle of the workday can be a challenge. And studies have also shown that when deciding between a nap and an “attractive wakeful activity,” they choose the activity.
Let’s face it, coffeehouses have multiple buzzes going on: people, Internet, connectivity, social interaction, exchanges of ideas, and tasty treats beyond the joes and javas. Naps tend to be solitary and, dare I say, not as sexy.
But for what it’s worth, hail to the nap.

Not many people think of the Bible when they think of ways to improve themselves. But the Bible is actually a smart way to go about self-improvement. The wisdom in the Bible is very old. It has been around a along time. About 3500 years to be exact. That’s a long time. Therefore, the Scriptures are reliable. If they were not reliable they would have been thrown out long ago.

 

Salvation: A Life Changing Event

 

 

In the Bible, salvation is seen as a pivotal event. It is something that happens to a person that changes them on the inside. Isn’t that what self-improvement is all about?  Changing on the inside?  Changing the way you think? I think so.

 

I have know many people with problems like excessive drinking who report that after the salvation event they no longer have the urge or desire to drink any more, and I know it’s true because I live with these people and see that they do not drink. Others report being delivered from strong addiction to drugs of all kinds and this is an overnight event. O yes, there is power in the biblical salvation event.

 

 

The Power of Belief in Salvation

 

One of the reasons biblical salvation is so powerful is that it involves belief. Belief is a very powerful thing you know. Jesus said that if you have belief the size of a mustard seed (that is a very small amount) you could say unto a mountain, "Be thou removed and be thou cast into the sea," and if you do not doubt in your heart: it will happen. Belief is a very powerful thing indeed.

 

Biblical salvation involves belief. Belief is a very powerful thing a human being can do. This leads to self-improvement. Believing in something has a very powerful effect on a human being, thus, bringing about change_ for the better.

 

Did you know that belief is a function of the human mind? It is something all men can do, and do. Weather you are aware of it or not you believe something: many things. Why not learn to put the power of belief to work for you?

Body Posture Affects Moods

A recent article from Canwest News Service said that recent research conducted at Hobart and William Smith College in New York state, has found that the “mere act of folding your arms increases perseverance and activates an unconscious desire to succeed.”

 Now the first response of people when they see someone with his/her arms folded, is to think back to their classes on non-verbal behaviour and think, “Oh, that person in being defensive”. And it is true that frequently the folded arms gesture indicates an unwillingness to agree with what a speaker is suggesting.

 However, it now appears that something else might be in play here as well, and the most interesting part of the research is that not only do our non-verbals show what we might be thinking, but our non-verbals might also trigger a psychological state that may create what we think.

 The folded arms folks in the research study spent more time on an impossible-to-solve anagram (word scramble), and in another study came up with more correct solutions to a puzzle than those who were asked to sit with their hands on their thighs.

 Usually we think that the psychological state leads to body movement, but it appears that this works both ways.

 What this suggests, then, is that we may have a range of other alternatives to use to modify our moods and mental states.  (Besides food!)

 Method actors appear to have understood this for years.  In order to “get into” the mood of the character being portrayed, the actor will adopt the appropriate posture.  If the character is sad, depressed, or lonely, then the actor will begin by adopting a stooped position, head down, shoulders slumped, etc.  That body posture creates an internal feeling in the actor which s/he is then able to convey to the audience.

 Remember the song from, I think, Sound of Music – Whenever I feel afraid, I hold my head erect, I whistle a happy tune, etc.  Looks as if the songwriter had it right.

 Next time you want to change your mental state, try changing your body posture first and see what effect is has on your mood.  It might be easier than trying to talk yourself out of a bad mood.

As expected of any winner, she queried on how she could get her hands on the gift. She got directions to the building where the winner would attend a short presentation in regards to the trip. On getting there she was ushered into a meeting room where a smartly dressed man introduced himself as the marketing manager and sat down. He then continued to explain to a group of people, who had apparently been informed that they have won, that the trip would cost half price with accommodation, food and a chauffeured cab. He was persuasive that this is the best offer one can get.

My friend started to doubt the man and decided to ask for time to get some money and come back. Her research showed that the man she had met had actually inflated the cost of visiting Egypt and that there exists many more travel companies that offer a better package. Further findings revealed that the ‘marketing manager’ and his team were conning a number of people with false allegations of winning while they only want to make money.

So the next time someone calls or emails you telling you that you have won a holiday, investigate further.
